Some people learn to network… and some of us were just born this way 😄
Let me give you a little “peep” into my world:
From primary to high school, I was that pupil—always found chatting on the sports fields (not playing 😅), visiting other classes during breaks, or perched at a teacher’s desk.
At varsity, my best friend and I were inseparable… until we got on campus! Walking with me was a stop-and-go experience—I’d greet everyone: students, lecturers, even the canteen staff. She was often amused (and occasionally annoyed 😆).
But here’s the thing: those connections helped us both. Whether it was getting help with assignments or scoring a little VIP treatment at the dining hall, relationships mattered.
Socially, I’ve always been the go-to person when people needed something—anything, really. And even when I didn’t know the answer, I’d tap into my networks to make it happen. No expectations. Just connection and contribution.
Fast forward to today:
As an entrepreneur, these same networks—especially those built during my corporate years—are opening doors for me. And as the saying goes:
“People do business with those they trust… or with those that people they trust, trust.”
One of my favourite full-circle moments?
Two friends of mine—living in different states in the U.S.—randomly met at the SA embassy. Friend 1 recognised Friend 2 and asked, “Aren’t you so-and-so, Disebo’s friend?”
Turns out, one was my Kilimanjaro climbing partner, and the other was someone I later coached for her Kilimanjaro climb the following year.
So yes... in my world, you're never really “safe” from crossing paths through me 😄
Today, I wear yet another hat—business development/door opener—for a client in waste management who's aiming to expand into the mining sector. And here we are—because I refuse to box myself in.
💡 Key takeaway:
Be present. Pay attention.
Share your passions. Open doors without expectation.
God always finds a way to return the favour.
And yes, it’s a long post 😅 but Maiyo Febi is right… maybe it’s time I write a book on “The Art and Power of Networking.” 📖
